For many families, the holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, for vulnerable families in Kawala, Bwaise, and surrounding communities, December 2020 was marked by hunger, financial hardship, and uncertainty. With the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, many families were struggling to afford food, clothing, and basic necessities, leaving children particularly vulnerable.
Recognizing this urgent need, the Fecane Child Foundation launched its first Holiday Giving Campaign to support struggling families with essential aid. Through the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partnerships, we were able to provide food packages, clothing, and educational materials to over 150 families, ensuring that children and their caregivers could experience hope, warmth, and dignity during the festive season.
This blog highlights the impact of our holiday initiative, the support provided, stories from beneficiaries, and how this effort laid the foundation for future annual giving programs.
The Urgent Need: Why Holiday Giving Mattered in 2020
December 2020 was particularly difficult for many families due to:
📉 COVID-19 Economic Hardships – Many caregivers had lost jobs or had their incomes reduced, making it hard to afford basic necessities.
🍽 Rising Food Insecurity – With many parents unable to work, families faced food shortages, forcing children to go hungry.
👕 Lack of Warm Clothing – Children in vulnerable communities lacked proper clothing for the cooler months, increasing the risk of illnesses.
📚 Disrupted Education – Due to school closures and financial struggles, many children lacked access to learning materials, making it difficult to keep up with their education.
Given these challenges, the foundation saw an urgent need to mobilize support and give back to the community.
Our Holiday Giving Initiative: What We Provided
To maximize our impact, we focused on three key areas of support:
🍛 1. Food Relief Packages
Hunger was the biggest concern for many families. To address this, we distributed food relief packages to ensure families could enjoy a nutritious meal during the holiday season.
📦 Each food package included:
✅ 10kg of maize flour (for making porridge and posho)
✅ 5kg of rice
✅ 3kg of beans
✅ Cooking oil
✅ Sugar and salt
🎯 Impact: Over 150 families (approx. 750 individuals) received food supplies that lasted two to three weeks, helping them start the new year with less worry about where their next meal would come from.
👕 2. Clothing Distribution for Children
Many vulnerable children in the community lacked proper clothing, often wearing torn, oversized, or undersized garments. To bring warmth and dignity, we distributed clothes and shoes, ensuring that children felt loved and cared for.
🎁 Items distributed:
✔ 100+ T-shirts, sweaters, and jackets
✔ 75 pairs of trousers and skirts
✔ 50 pairs of shoes
💡 Impact Story: A 9-year-old boy named Brian, who had been living in extreme poverty, received his first-ever pair of shoes from our distribution. His joy was unmatched, and he proudly said, “Now I can walk without hurting my feet!”
📚 3. Educational Materials for Learning
Education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty. Since many schools had been closed due to the pandemic, children needed books and learning materials to continue their studies at home.
📚 We provided:
✔ Exercise books and pens
✔ Reading materials for primary school children
✔ Basic school supplies like rulers and sharpeners
🎯 Impact: Over 90 children received essential learning materials, enabling them to continue their education despite the challenges.
Community Involvement: Volunteers and Donors Made It Possible
This initiative would not have been possible without the generosity of donors and the dedication of volunteers.
🤝 Key Contributors:
✔ Local businesses and well-wishers who donated food and clothing.
✔ Volunteers who helped pack and distribute supplies.
✔ Youth football players from Fecane Child Foundation, who assisted in organizing the event and engaging with younger kids.
Despite limited resources, the spirit of giving and unity made the event a success.

Lessons Learned & Plans for Future Giving Programs
This initiative taught us valuable lessons and set the stage for future efforts.
Key Takeaways:
✅ The demand for aid was overwhelming – More families needed support than we could initially reach.
✅ Community involvement is crucial – Partnering with local businesses, volunteers, and donors increased our reach.
✅ Holiday giving should be an annual effort – The positive impact motivated us to continue this tradition every year.
Future Plans (2021 & Beyond):
✔ Expand the number of families served in future holiday campaigns.
✔ Strengthen partnerships with corporate sponsors and local organizations.
✔ Introduce a “Holiday Toy Drive” to provide gifts for children.
✔ Organize Holiday Community Events to bring joy beyond material aid.
