A Journey of Hope and Transformation
In the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic, when uncertainty and hardship loomed over communities worldwide, a beacon of hope emerged in the heart of Uganda. The Fecane Child Foundation (FCF) was born in 2020 as a response to the increasing vulnerabilities faced by children and youth living in slum areas.
Founded by Mr. Badru Kalanzi Shafic, FCF began as a community-based organization (CBO) with a mission to uplift and empower the most at-risk children—orphans, street kids, and school dropouts—by providing them with access to education, welfare, rehabilitation, and life skills. What started as a small initiative has now grown into a transformative force impacting hundreds of young lives across Wakiso District, Uganda.
Turning Crisis into Opportunity
The Covid-19 era was a challenging time for families worldwide, but it was especially devastating for those already living in poverty. Many children were left orphaned, and countless families struggled to meet even their basic needs.
FCF quickly mobilized resources to provide food relief, psychological support, and educational assistance to vulnerable children. Recognizing that many of these children lacked access to formal education, FCF developed structured learning opportunities, mentorship programs, and moral guidance to restore hope in their young lives.
Through dedication and resilience, FCF officially registered as a CBO and a company in 2023, expanding its reach and services. A needs assessment conducted in our early years of operation revealed that intervention was most urgently needed in education, sports, community development, and rehabilitation.
Our Core Values
At Fecane Child Foundation, our principles guide our every action:
- Transparency: We operate with integrity and accountability to ensure every resource is utilized effectively.
- Community Participation: Sustainable change happens when communities take ownership of their transformation.
- Resource Orientation: We believe in leveraging the talents and strengths within the community to empower our beneficiaries.
- Social Cohesion: We work with children and youth from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing inclusion, equality, and human rights.
Our Areas of Intervention
FCF operates in Wakiso District, particularly in slum areas like Bwaise and Nansana, where children and youth face extreme hardships. Many families in these areas struggle with poverty, unemployment, lack of education, HIV/AIDS, and high rates of crime and child labor. Our mission is to create long-term solutions to these challenges.
Our Target Group:
Our programs primarily focus on orphans, street children, school dropouts, young girls, and refugee children who face multiple vulnerabilities. By providing education, mentorship, and social support, we help these children break free from the cycle of poverty.
Our Key Programs & Achievements
1. Education & Girls’ Empowerment
FCF believes education is the key to long-term change. Over the past four years, we have: ✅ Provided full and partial scholarships to vulnerable children. ✅ Established the Girls Education Challenge (GEC), offering safe spaces, mentorship, and life skills training for young girls to prevent early pregnancies and forced marriages. ✅ Worked towards improving literacy and numeracy among out-of-school children.
2. Soccer Academy for Street Children
Launched in 2023 in partnership with Empala United, our Soccer Academy provides a safe and structured environment where street children can: ✅ Develop teamwork and discipline through sports. ✅ Gain access to education and mentorship. ✅ Reintegrate into society while pursuing their passion for football.
3. Drama & Community Awareness
To raise awareness on HIV/AIDS, hygiene, human rights, and child protection, we established the Fecane Dance and Drama Group in 2023. Our team has: ✅ Conducted 10 community drama performances addressing key social issues. ✅ Participated in 5 major outreach events in Wakiso District. ✅ Engaged hundreds of families and youth through creative education.
4. HIV/AIDS & Reproductive Health Programs
Slum areas are at high risk of teen pregnancies, early marriages, and HIV/AIDS. To combat this, we: ✅ Offer counseling services through our network of mentors and social workers. ✅ Conduct peer-to-peer education programs on sexual health and well-being. ✅ Partner with healthcare providers to ensure access to reproductive health services.
5. Rescue, Rehabilitation & Reintegration of Street Children
In 2023, we carried out 20 outreach missions in areas such as Kisenyi, Kamwokya, Kawempe, Bwaise, and Kalerwe, reaching over 100 children. Through these efforts: ✅ 2 children per outreach were successfully rescued and referred for rehabilitation. ✅ We helped children transition from street life to safe homes. ✅ We provided essential counseling, skill development, and reintegration support.
Looking Ahead: Our Vision for the Future
Our work at Fecane Child Foundation is far from over. As we move forward, we aim to: 🔹 Expand our Soccer Academy to accommodate more children and provide professional training. 🔹 Secure funding for a primary school project that offers free and low-cost education for vulnerable kids. 🔹 Strengthen our vocational training programs to equip youth with job-ready skills. 🔹 Increase partnerships with local and international donors to enhance our impact.
